LAL blog journey begins. . .

Roadway

So given that I do not know how to build a website, I have set up a freebie blog, and I hope to use the platform to update you over the summer with photos, news of recent happenings, and tell you about future happenings among other things.  If you’re here to check it out, thank you for coming!  I am excited about having a more spacious place to share LAL content.  This will be my first experience with a blog, so your comments and suggestions are always welcome.  I have a vision and hopeful expectations that I may have guest bloggers who will bring some new, different and exciting content to us.  If YOU would like to be a guest, please let me know.  But for now, unless otherwise stated, the content here will be  submitted by yours truly.  Your guidance will help educate me, and I love to learn, so leave a comment!

If you are not familiar with the Legal Assistants of Louisville as an organization, please keep reading.   The organization was originally founded in 1996 to support local legal secretaries through education and networking and was the first legal secretary association in the country to affiliate with Legal Secretaries International Inc.  Today our organization is open to anyone who is or has been employed in a position assisting the practice of law in the Louisville legal community.  Membership meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at 11:30 a.m. (RSVP for lunch). Educational speakers are featured.

Members are offered and can receive

  • education (LAL conducts study groups for various certification programs offered on national and state levels)
  • monthly newsletter with job referrals
  • networking opportunities
  • respect
  • lifelong friendships

Since 1999, LAL has, as an organization

  •  sponsored an annual cookout for the homeless at the Cathedral of Assumption on Fifth Street.  This year, 2018, almost 200 people were served a hot meal and were provided necessities such as socks, tee shirts, dental and other hygiene products.
  • Assist Louisville Bar Association and Legal Aid Society at their Divorce Clinics.
  • Sponsor a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) family during Christmas.
  • Host an annual Boss Appreciation Luncheon and announce the Boss of the Year, Secretary of the Year, and Member of the Year.

We are an educational association for legal assistants whose Members value ethics, professionalism and continuing legal education. Our Mission is to increase the competencies of legal assistants so that they may better serve attorneys, courts, businesses, governments and the Metropolitan Louisville Community. Our members include legal assistants of all levels of experience who support their professional association with their time, talent, spirit and resources.

You are invited to attend a meeting as the guest of any member.  You can contact me, Donna Taylor, via this blog or you can ask a friend or LAL Board Member about attending a meeting or becoming a member.  Our Board for 2018 consists of

  • Sarah Kleinhenz, Cowley Law Office  – President
  • Loretta Sugg, Frost Brown Todd – Vice President
  • Julie Hall, Boehl Stopher & Graves – Secretary
  • David Mohr, Louisville Bar Association – Treasurer
  • Jeff Summers, One Source Discovery – Director of Community Services

Consider joining us!  Your time, talent and spirit can certainly be put to good use, sharpened and exercised with us.   And we’d love to have you.  Our next meeting will be June 19 at 11:30 a.m.  You are invited!
